Is sex a good form of exercise?

Burning calories, racing heart, sweating body, stretched muscles… could be used to describe both an active sex session and a vigorous cardio workout!

So, is sex a good form of exercise?

Sex can increase your metabolic rate, boost the immune system and relieve stress. The same positive effects you get from exercising too. The average sex session lasts about half an hour and burns between 50 and 100 calories, depending on your activity, enthusiasm and technique. Put simply, the more energetic you are between the sheets, the more calories you’ll burn! And surely thirty minutes of sex is likely to be far more enjoyable than half an hour down the gym!

Top or bottom?

Your choice of position affects which muscle groups are used and strengthened too. If you like to be on top, you’ll use your upper arm, leg and core abdominal muscles more. If you’re a woman who prefers to be on the bottom, you can strengthen your pelvic floor muscles by doing your Kegel exercises – something that will heighten the pleasure mid-thrust for both you and your partner.

What are Kegel exercises?

Kegel exercises were originally developed by a doctor of the same name to help women strengthen their pelvic muscles. These exercises can help increase the intensity of your orgasms and consequently your partner’s pleasure.

First, you need to find your pelvic floor muscles. These are the ones you’ll use when doing Kegels. When you’re weeing, clench your muscles to stop the flow of urine for a few seconds. Then release these muscles to let the wee flow again. If you want to check you’re using the right ones, put your finger in your vagina and tighten the muscles. If you can feel your finger being squeezed even just a little, then you’ve found the right muscles.

Contract the pelvic muscles hard for a second and then release, ten times in a row. Repeat five to ten times a day for best results. You will soon be able to do Kegels unknown to anyone around you – watching TV, doing the dishes or standing in line at the supermarket.

As with any exercise, the results won’t be immediate, but in a space of 6-8 weeks you should notice a difference and enjoy the rewards!
